The Old City is the walkable heart of Chiang Mai. Inside the moat you can walk from Tha Phae Gate (east) to Suan Dok Gate (west), passing temples, restaurants and bars, and the Sunday Walking Street that takes over Ratchadamnoen Road every week.

Where is the Old City in Chiang Mai?
The Old City is Chiang Mai's walled historic center — a 1.5km × 1.5km square surrounded by the moat and the remains of the 13th-century city wall. It contains most of the oldest temples, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, and Wat Chiang Man. It sits in the Mueang Chiang Mai district (Si Phum and Phra Sing tambons).
How much does it cost to rent in the Old City?
We have not read enough asking rents inside the moat yet to give a fair figure. Expect smaller, older units in low-rise buildings, and few modern condos.
Is the Old City safe?
The everyday concerns are pickpocketing in crowded markets and near bars on Moon Muang Road, and scooter accidents on the busy inner sois.
Did the 2024 Chiang Mai floods affect the Old City?
Yes, at its eastern edge — the October 2024 Ping River flood reached the Tha Phae Gate area. If you rent near the eastern moat, ask how the building fared in 2024.
