Mae Rim is where you go when you want Chiang Mai without Chiang Mai. The district sits 300-500m above the Chiang Mai basin, which means temperatures run 3-5°C cooler year-round and burning season air quality is significantly better — PM2.5 averages around 20 μg/m³ vs 28-30 in Nimman.
The area is dominated by retiree villas, organic farms, eco-resorts, and a handful of moo baans catering to expat families (especially those with kids at Prem, which has its primary campus just inside Mae Rim). Rentals are generous — a 3-bedroom house with garden and pool runs ฿20,000-60,000/month, and you get significantly more space for your money than in Hang Dong.
The trade-off is isolation. You need a car, you're 25-30 minutes from anywhere, and fiber internet is still being rolled out in the outer valleys. If you're a digital nomad who needs coworking and cafe culture, this is the wrong neighborhood. If you're a retiree who wants mountain views and clean air, it's the best choice in greater Chiang Mai.
