Tambon Suthep stretches from Huay Kaew Road at the edge of Nimman up the forested flank of Doi Suthep, the 1,676-meter mountain that defines the

The character is split between three sub-areas. The Huay Kaew Road strip is commercial and busy, with Kad Suan Kaew mall, the Chiang Mai Zoo, and a cluster of student dormitories and budget condos. Walk uphill from Huay Kaew and the density drops quickly: character houses on garden plots and older teak bungalows, with Doi Suthep rising directly behind them. The third, Pong Noi, is a quiet village area with galleries and studios tucked between the houses.

Homes follow the same gradient, from condos near Huay Kaew Road to character houses with mountain views higher up. The CMU campus is pleasant on foot, but the uphill sois have patchy sidewalks, and a scooter makes the short ride to Nimman easy.

The honest downside is burning season. From February to April smoke settles over the Chiang Mai valley, and fires on Doi Suthep's forested slopes can add smoke close to home. The rest of the year, Suthep gives you quiet streets, the mountain at your back and the city within easy reach.

What does rent cost in Suthep near CMU?

We have not read enough asking rents in Suthep yet to give a fair figure. Near Huay Kaew Road you'll find condos and student housing; uphill, character houses with gardens and mountain views.

Is Suthep walkable?

Partly. The CMU main campus and the Huay Kaew Road corridor near Kad Suan Kaew are comfortable on foot, but the uphill sois toward Doi Suthep have patchy sidewalks. A scooter makes daily errands much easier.

How bad is burning season in Suthep?

Hard going, as across Chiang Mai. From February to April smoke from seasonal burning settles over the valley, and fires on Doi Suthep's slopes can add smoke close to home. Plan for an air purifier at home; some people leave town for the worst weeks.
