Tambon Haiya sits immediately south of the Chiang Mai Old City moat, along Wualai Road and below Chiang Mai Gate. Its character is defined by

Saturday evenings transform Wualai Road into a walking street. Vendors line both sidewalks, selling handmade silver, traditional Lanna snacks, and Northern Thai textiles. Chiang Mai Gate Market — a fresh-produce and street-food market — sits at the northern end of Wualai, a short walk from much of Haiya.

Traditional wooden houses still stand in the neighborhood. Wualai Road is flat, temple-dense, and easy on foot, though the Saturday market means residents lose Saturday-evening soi access.

Burning-season air quality is severe like all of central Chiang Mai, worst from February to April, and the busy Chiang Mai Gate intersection brings a steady hum of traffic noise to the streets nearest it. What it offers in exchange is authentic Lanna craft heritage, lower tourist density than the Old City, and a short walk to the southern city gate — a quieter alternative to living inside the moat itself.
