Why is Wat Phra Singh important?

Wat Phra Singh is the most sacred temple in Northern Thailand and the spiritual center of Chiang Mai's Old City. Founded in 1345 during the Lanna Kingdom, it houses the revered Phra Singh Buddha image. During Songkran (Thai New Year), the image is paraded through the city in the largest religious procession of the year.

Is Wat Phra Singh free to visit?

The temple itself is free to enter, but there is a small ฿40-60 entrance fee for foreign visitors to the main viharn and ubosot buildings. Thai nationals enter free. The temple is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM. Dress code is strict: covered shoulders and knees, shoes off before entering buildings.

About Wat Phra Singh

Wat Phra Singh ("Temple of the Lion Buddha") is the most sacred temple in Northern Thailand and the spiritual center of Chiang Mai's Old City. Founded in 1345 during the Lanna Kingdom, the temple houses the Phra Singh Buddha image, one of the most revered Buddha statues in Thailand. The temple complex sits at the western end of Ratchadamnoen Road, the main ceremonial street of the Old City.

The temple is still an active monastery with daily prayers, weekly meditation sessions (open to English-speaking visitors), and the annual Songkran (Thai New Year) processions when the Phra Singh image is paraded through the city. The beautiful wooden viharn with gold-and-red interior is one of the best surviving examples of Lanna temple architecture.
