About Warorot Market (Kad Luang)
Warorot Market, which people in Chiang Mai still call Kad Luang, the big market, stands where Chang Moi Road meets Wichayanon Road, between the Old City and the Ping River. It is named after Chao Inthawarorot, a former ruler of Chiang Mai. The ground it stands on was once a royal cremation site; Dara Rasmi, consort of King Chulalongkorn, had the remains moved to Wat Suan Dok and paid for the market.
Its tall hall is packed with dried foods, northern Thai snacks and ingredients, clothes and household goods, and the lanes beside it are the city's small Chinatown. A flower market sells behind it on the river side, into the night.
Some stalls open from about 5 a.m.; clothes and souvenir shops close at about 6 to 7 p.m., and the neighbouring lane stays open until about 11 p.m.
