This guide compares five hospitals in Chiang Mai's city district, Mueang Chiang Mai. Three are private (Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Ram and Lanna), one is the private hospital of Chiang Mai University's medical faculty (Sriphat), and one is run by a foundation of the Church of Christ in Thailand (McCormick). They differ on price, on which insurers they list, and on which services for foreign patients they state. Every figure below comes from the hospital's own pages, with its date, and the sources are listed at the end.

1. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai (BHC)

Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, opened in 2014, is the Chiang Mai hospital of Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS), which describes itself as Thailand's largest private hospital operator, with 60 hospitals as of August 2026. It carries the Bangkok Hospital brand, one of 32 Bangkok Hospital-branded hospitals in that network. Its International Medical Services team provides interpreters and medical coordinators for overseas visitors and expatriates, and the hospital publishes the 44 insurers and assistance companies it has contracts with.

The trade-off is price: its standard room has the highest published rate of the five. None of the five publishes a doctor's consultation fee, but the room rates show the gap. A standard single room here costs ฿4,650 a day after the hospital's listed discount of 25 to 40 percent, with nursing, hospital service and three Thai meals (2026 sheet, valid to 31 December 2026). A single room at Lanna costs ฿2,880 on its list of 16 March 2024.

  • Insurers: the hospital publishes the 44 insurers and assistance companies it has contracts with, among them Allianz Worldwide Care, April International, AXA Insurance, Chubb Samaggi, Pacific Cross and Thai Health Insurance (list read 28 October 2026); check yours there.
  • Centres: heart, bone and joint, cancer, brain, women's health, digestive and liver, and health check-ups.
  • Location: 88/8-9 Moo 6, Chiang Mai-Lampang Superhighway, Nong Pa Khrang, on the east side of the city, so it is quickest to reach from the east.
  • Emergency: open 24 hours, seven days a week; the 24-hour hotline is 1719 within Thailand. International Medical Services also offers phone language support in 24 other languages around the clock.
  • Accreditation: listed in Joint Commission International's directory (Hospital Program, effective date 29 August 2015, checked 28 October 2026).

2. Chiang Mai Ram Hospital

Chiang Mai Ram, opened in 1993, is a private hospital founded by Chiang Mai doctors together with Ramkhamhaeng Hospital in Bangkok. Its published room rate is below Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai's: ฿3,800 a day for a deluxe room with nursing and medical service (list updated 29 January 2026). Its International Patient Service Center provides medical interpreters in seven languages (English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Burmese and Korean); ask for one when you book.

Its specialist centres include a heart catheter (balloon) centre, a paralysis treatment centre and a children's hospital. Patients who pay themselves get 20 percent off room, medicine, X-ray and lab charges on bills of ฿10,000 or more with the hospital's free Platinum card; doctor fees, packages and dental work are excluded (offer published 3 September 2026).

  • Best fit: patients paying themselves who want a private hospital with a lower published room rate than Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, and families, through its children's hospital.
  • Insurers: the hospital publishes 71 insurance and assistance partners, 21 of them under English names such as International SOS, Henner, APRIL Assistance, Euro-Center and HTH Worldwide (GeoBlue); check yours there.
  • Location: 8 Bunruangrit Road, Si Phum, just west of the Old City, a short Grab ride from Nimman, Santitham or the Old City.
  • Emergency: the hospital runs a 24-hour emergency ambulance and patient-transfer service with emergency medicine doctors, on 052-004601.

What this list deliberately does not do

We have not assigned numerical scores or ranked the hospitals against each other. None of the five publishes a doctor's consultation fee (Lanna lists dental check-ups at ฿200 to ฿300), so we quote none. Room rates and fixed-price packages are published with dates, and we quote those with their dates. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Ram and Sriphat publish the insurers they work with, and Lanna has an older list; McCormick publishes none. Only the hospital can confirm your insurer on the day of your visit.

Room rates a day, self-pay (each hospital's own price page or sheet, read 28 October 2026)
Hospital and roomA dayPrice list
Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai, standard single after its listed 25–40% discount (nursing, service, three Thai meals)฿4,6502026
Chiang Mai Ram, deluxe (nursing and medical service)฿3,80029 Jan 2026
Sriphat, standard (doctor and nursing; meals ฿220 each)฿3,500–3,80015 Jan 2026
Lanna, single (food, nursing, service)฿2,88016 Mar 2024
McCormick, standard single (nursing, hospital service; doctor fees extra)฿2,80027 Feb 2026
Rajavej, standard adult (food, service; nursing extra)฿2,4001 Jan 2024

Rajavej Chiang Mai Hospital, on the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road in Wat Ket, is not one of the five but is worth knowing if you pay yourself or are covered by Social Security. It publishes the lowest standard room rate above before nursing, which it charges separately, and a ฿22,000 normal-delivery package valid to 31 December 2026 (the baby's costs and any complications are extra). It is on the Social Security Office's 2025 list of Chiang Mai hospitals, as are Lanna and Maharaj Nakorn.

How to choose between them

If you have international insurance, start with the hospitals that publish their insurer lists and run services for foreign patients: Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai (44 contracted insurers) and Chiang Mai Ram (71 partners). For a booked specialist consultation, Sriphat's doctors are Faculty of Medicine staff. For children, McCormick runs a Child Health Center open daily from 8am to 8pm, and Chiang Mai Ram has a children's hospital. If you pay yourself, compare the room rates above: Lanna and McCormick publish the lowest single-room rates of the five, and Rajavej's standard room costs less before nursing. In an emergency, skip Sriphat: it lists no emergency department.

Frequently asked questions

Which hospital in Chiang Mai is best for foreigners without insurance?

A standard room costs ฿2,400 at Rajavej before nursing (2024 list), ฿3,500 to ฿3,800 at Sriphat plus ฿220 a meal, ฿3,800 at Chiang Mai Ram and ฿4,650 at Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai after its listed discount. Do Chiang Mai hospitals accept international insurance?

Yes. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai publishes the 44 insurers and assistance companies it has contracts with, and Chiang Mai Ram publishes 71 insurance and assistance partners. Sriphat's Foreign Center lists 61 international insurers and assistance companies, among them Bupa Global and Aetna International, and gives out-patient and in-patient credit once your insurer's letter of guarantee arrives. Lanna's English list of overseas insurers is old, and McCormick publishes none. Call before a planned visit, since direct-billing agreements change.
